After removal of some very mature weeds on June 18th by a dedicated team of Rotarians, Gauld Nurseries arrived on June 20th to add fertilizer and mulch, getting the Hospital Garden ready for the 2025 season. Thanks to all involved. And Clarice's Lambs Ears (taken from her own Garden years ago and replanted last year for the Grand Opening) are thriving. In fact, they are “Monster Lambs Ears”. Use the Read More link for photos of the Garden!

Bob Morningstar Rock Dedication Well-Attended
Twenty-six Rotarians, significant others and guests attended the dedication of one of our Sitting Rocks at the St. Catharines Hospital site Clarice West Hobbs Contemplative Garden to honour long-time member Bob Morningstar on May 21, 2025 at Mr Mikes Steakhouse. The family was represented by Bob’s brothers Scott and Dan along with Bob’s friends Josie and Debbie. Garden Chair Eric read out a brief history of Bob’s time in Rotary and presented the family with a photo collage of Bob (including his Paul Harris Award from 2014 and glory days at the Lobsterfest Salad Bar); of the installed plaque on his rock and a “view from the Rock” of the Garden.

Food4Kids Spring Grocery Store Drive May 30th at Sobeys Scott Street!
Our spring grocery store food drive will take place on May 30 at Sobeys 400 Scott Street, St Catharines. The drive will run from 10:00-6:00 pm with packing and sorting continuing at Cushman Rd until 6:30 or so. As our space at the store is not as concentrated as previous food drives, we may need to spread out along the front sidewalk. In order to have enough volunteers to pass out the list of food items, Rotary and Food4kids literature, and mind the cash donation box, it would be desirable to have three volunteers for each shift.

Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup Big Success!
Saturday April 26th saw members and friends meet at our Charles Ansel to save our small piece of the environment. We joined over one billion people worldwide working on projects together in their communities during the week of Earth Day by doing a litter clean-up covering the Park and its abutting lands along the Welland Canal Parkway and Bunting Road itself, north of the Park in both sides of Lock One. Congratulations to Chair, and chief litter picker extraordinaire, Bruce Timms for an outstanding event despite the usual cold and RAIN! Following the clean-up, we retired to Rickijos for some liquid refreshments.

World Polio Day Celebrations in St. Catharines!
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. The Rotary Club of St. Catharines Lakeshore participated in a flag raising at City Hall along with Mayor Matt Siscoe, Rotary St. Catharines, Rotary Club of St. Catharines South and the Interact club to bring greater local awareness to help End Polio Now. In addition, local Rotary Clubs from across Niagara celebrated on the evening of October 26th with Niagara Falls itself illuminated in the distinctive colours of End Polio Now.

It was our great pleasure to have James Symons, founder of Toolbox Project Niagara, as our guest speaker. James recognized a need in his community and took action. He serves underprivileged men with a personal gift bag at Christmas. He is asking us to help him provide for these men with sling bags filled with items such as body wash, shaving apparel, socks, gloves, toque, snacks, puzzle books etc. Most of these men in need live in shelters on restricted incomes. TABITHA FOUNDATION
Yolanda Henry, an invested volunteer with the Tabitha Foundation, shared its goals and accomplishments of "Building Dreams for Cambodia's Poor". The Savings Program is the cornerstone of Tabitha's work. It encourages families to save their money in order to break the cycle of poverty. How it works is families achieve 4 to 6 dream items each year, ranging from basic necessities like a cooking pot, a sleeping mat, a bicycle and/or a child's education. Tabitha's relationship with a family will last for approx 5 to 7 years. This is long enough to allow families to break the cycle of poverty and graduate to complete financial independence. Besides the Savings Program, the Foundation's team of volunteers builds homes, wells, schools and are currently invested in the building of a hospital to serve the health needs of the women. Tabitha Foundation is a registered Canadian charity. 2% of all funds raised in Canada are used for Canadian Administration. For more information go to www.tabitha.ca
